Hello, and welcome to Tuesday Night Movie Night. You might have some questions about all of this. Here are some answers.

What is Tuesday Night Movie Night?

It’s a newsletter, silly.

Every Tuesday, I email you one movie recommendation.

Sometimes, I'll give you hidden gems. Other times, I'll give you mainstream. This is beside the point, which is that each movie I give you is a bonafide good movie. That’s the promise.

What’s included in each email?

A film recommendation and a spoiler-free essay about the film.

Aren’t you just reviewing movies, then?

A part of me yearns to feel special. So, I am telling myself that these aren't movie reviews. These are recommendations, paired with classy essays from me, a very smart, intellectual, super special person. What makes them different from movie reviews?

First, I don't rate films on a scale involving numbers, thumbs, or stars. Second, I don’t publish content about bad movies. These are both things that movie critics do. See? I’m special.

An ancillary benefit – this keeps things simple. Members know that, if a movie recommendation is published here, it’s a good movie.

What does it cost?

It’s free.

Don’t miss another Tuesday.

Why do I have to sign up?

You don’t have to sign up. I never said that. But, for the sake of answering the question, consider this unnecessary hypothetical:

Let's say you put a gun to my head and told me I needed to convince you to sign up. This threat triggers some sort of primal coping mechanism in my psyche, causing me to regress into my ten year-old self. An unfortunate consequence of this – I'm unable think about anything aside from earning the approval of my father. My mind deftly uses this insatiable desire for my father's acceptance to improve my odds of survival, and convinces me that if I can talk you into joining my newsletter, daddy will love me unconditionally. And so, for this reason, I try to talk you into it.

First of all, let me be clear. There is no place for threats in Tuesday Night Movie Night. What the hell is wrong with you? Nonetheless, I'd convince you to sign up by reminding you of 3 universal truths:

First: It’s hard to find movies to watch. Tuesday Night Movie Night makes it easier.

Second: It’s embarrassing when you pick a bad movie. People will ridicule you, call you names, and throw stuff at you. Tuesday Night Movie Night helps you pick good movies.

Third: It’s fun to feel smart. Ever watch a movie and have thoughts about it? Like, intellectual thoughts? Perhaps you observed a potent allegory, or the way the director played with sound in the edit. Tuesday Night Movie Night can affirm these thoughts, or provide these intellectual thoughts so that you can repeat them to your friends and feel superior.

Who are you?

My name is Blake Levy. I like movies and I’m a writer. My brother’s name is Drew. He likes movies, too. We live next to each other.

We have a Tuesday tradition. Each week, Drew curates a list of movies. Then, I select one film from this list and we watch it together. We’ve been doing this for years. On a week’s delay, I’ve always sent the movies we liked along to friends and coworkers, including a short writeup on each film.

Over time, my boyish little knowledge worker hands were buckling from copy/pasting too much across chats, emails, threads, and texts. It was nearly too much to bear.

Enter the email newsletter. A solution built on the cutting edge technical foundation of electronic mail. A solution that would allow me to do exactly what I’d set out to do, without all the annoying parts.

After starting the newsletter, something happened. Friends of friends, often people I didn’t know, began signing up. Through word of mouth. Which is when I realized this little thing could become a big thing. So, I started actively telling people about it instead of hiding it like a naughty little secret.

Drew and I agreed to work together on it. Drew would curate the movies, just like before. And I would manage the website and newsletter.

And so, Tuesday Night Movie Night was born. The mission is simple: build a community of people that watch good movies on Tuesday nights. Since then, tnmn has grown into a vibrant community. A place to get movie recommendations from some guys, instead of some algorithm.
